Introducing Kairos - a new startup aiming to remove hundreds of megatonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by leveraging biomass.
Introducing Kairos Carbon! A spinout of Deep Science Ventures, Kairos aims to remove hudreds of megatonnes of atmospheric CO2 annually, using biomass.
Why biology? Extracting CO2 from the air—where it's present at just ~420 parts per million — is resource-intensive. All carbon removal methods face limitations at scale, whether due to energy demands (Direct Air Capture) or material constraints (Enhanced Rock Weathering). Biomass, while not infinite, is a valuable resource that’s often wasted. Billions of tonnes of sewage, food, agricultural, and municipal waste are discarded globally each year. Some of it is used for energy, but much ends up landfilled or incinerated, releasing CO2 back into the atmosphere. Kairos intervenes before that happens, capturing CO2 from waste and storing it safely underground for thousands of years.
We’re grateful to Deep Science Ventures for their mentorship and to the Grantham Foundation for their support and investment.
